Introduction

After the confusion of tongues in Genesis 10, the earth was divided into 70 nations, each with a guardian angel. New nations then emerged. This continues to this day. Examples of new nations include Edom, Ishmael, Moab, Ammon, and even Israel (mi yodeya). These nations have their origins in one of the 70 nations. This includes the nation of Heber. From this nation emerged the family of Terah, including Abram (Genesis 11). Finally, the descendants of Abram, as progenitor with various wives, Sarah, Hagar, and Keturah. From these, entirely new nations also emerged (Genesis 16, 21, 25).

The question from the preceding section is: do these nations also have a guardian angel?

Research

In the Zohar (1), Volume III, the guardian angels of the nations of Esau—Edom, Ishmael, and Israel—are mentioned after the Flood. Despite Israel being God's people, He punished them for their sins by sending them into exile across the earth. Michael is Israel's guardian angel (Daniel 10). The guardian angel of Edom, and later of the Roman Empire, is the angel Sammael. This angel wields great power in the heavenly realms and over the nations of the earth. He is Israel's great adversary and influences the nations who agree with him (Dov Stein, Chabad.org, July 22, 2025). The guardian angel of Ishmael (2) is Rahav (The Zohar, Volume III). This angel is also powerful on earth and in the spiritual realm. In current times, we see actors in Western nations uniting with Islamic groups against the nation of Israel.

The Relationship Between Edom and the Roman Empire

Rabbinic views (see, among others, Ginzberg, Volumes 5 and 6, 1998, etc.) and those of Dr. F. de Graaff (Het geheim van de wereldgeschiedenis, 1982) state that world history would be influenced by the (spiritual) opposition between Jacob (Israel) and Esau (Edom with the Roman Empire) (3). King Herod, as an Edomite and vassal of the Romans, was hated by his Jewish subjects (4). After the Jewish revolt against the Romans in 70 AD, Israel went into exile for centuries. The Edomites disappeared as a nation. After that time, the Romans (pseudo) called Israel Edom. This was due to a similar opposition to that between Israel and Edom.

Nations that emerged after the 70 nations are, as mentioned, Ammon, Moab, Edom, and Israel. New nations have emerged from the year 1000 until the present day. In Africa, for example, South Sudan became a new independent state on July 9, 2011. In Europe, European nations became independent from the 10th century onward. The United States was founded in North America in 1776. According to Catholic and rabbinic sources, every nation has its own guardian angel (Tom Hoopes, Aleteia and Christianity, July 21, 2023) (5). This also applies to the aforementioned nations.

The guardian angel of the United States is appointed by God Himself (Marianne Glitter, The Mighty Angel of the United States, September 26, 2025). Russia also has a guardian angel (Alexander Dugin, 1996) (6). Rabbinic sources include the four volumes of The Zohar and The Complete Jewish Bible (Chabad.org). According to the Rabbinic Talmud, every blade of grass has its own angel that bends over it. Therefore, all nations in the world also have their guardian angel (Dov Stein, September 2025) (7). Every nation, in order to exist in this physical world, must possess a spiritual entity (angel). This entity represents the spiritual potential that this nation possesses (November 29, 2017 (5778), article by Rabbi Yisroel Ciner (Series: Parsha Insights).

A next question is: What do conflicts between angels of the nations in the heavenly realms mean?

In the text about the heavenly realms of the angels of the nations, the following is written: When the heavenly servants fight among themselves, a dispute immediately arises among the nations, as in the text: "But now I must return to fight the servant [angel] of Persia." He demands an extension of the kingdom of Persia, so that Persia can subdue Israel (Daniel 10:13-21, Rashi, The Complete Jewish Bible, Chabad.org). When after this, the time of the kingdom of Greece arrives, Alexander of Macedonia will arise.

I will indeed declare to you what is written in the faithful Scripture, but none of the heavenly princes will endeavor to help me, except your heavenly prince Michael. (Rashi The Complete Jewish Bible, Chabad.org.) Revelation 12:7-8 describes the battle between Michael and Sammael. War was waged in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon and his angels. They could not prevail, and their place was no longer found in heaven (8).

Conclusion

From the foregoing, it can be deduced that nations (even those that emerged later) must have a guardian angel to survive. If a nation violates God's commandments, it weakens its angel. The reverse is also true. If a nation acts according to God's commandments, Then she strengthens her angel (Chaim Luzzatto, The Way of God, translated and annotated by Aryeh Kaplan, 1996). Where religion is dominant in a nation, it influences culture through the guardian angel. When this diminishes, it is a sign of erosion, a loss of religious power, and will lead to secularization. We see this in Western European democracy. Some examples will be given later.

There is also war in the heavenly realms between angels of the nations, which is reflected on earth. For there are no wars in the world, no ruler [of a nation] is displaced from his place in his kingdom, until the heavenly armies and the stars of the other heavens [except those of Israel] all fight their battles and disputes with one another. Then the four ofanim stand above [those below] in the four directions of the physical world (From the times of Simon Bar Yocha, The Supernal Source of War: In the heavenly palaces all battles begin). The decline of Christianity in the Western world (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).

Since the end of World War II (1939-1945), there has been a decline in Christianity/culture in the Western world. Although most countries in the Western world were historically exclusively Christian, Western European nations in particular have transformed into secular, democratic, multicultural societies after World War II (Wikepedia).

For example, the Netherlands has become a secular country. For the first time, there are more non-believers than believers in the Netherlands. This is evident from the SCP report "Outside Church and Mosque," published today, March 24, 2022.

Islam is generally considered the fastest-growing religion in Europe, primarily due to immigration, and is displacing Christianity.

Why is Europe declining?

The French-Polish geo-economist Daniel Foubert strongly criticizes the course of Western Europe. According to him, the damage caused by decades of multicultural policy is irreparable. "It's demographic, territorial, cultural. It's now anchored in the next hundred years," Foubert states in an analysis circulating among conservative thinkers. Concluding remarks

According to Dr. F. de Graaff, the Christian metaphysical domain in Western Europe is becoming increasingly empty and repressed. This is partly due to secular ideology, the growth of Islam, other religions, and a declining Christian support base (F. de Graaff, Het Europese Nihilisme, 1956, and Als goden sterven, 1969). Could this be an indication that the angels of these nations are severely weakened and God is disappearing from view?

1) The Zohar (Hebrew: "shining, radiant") is a collection of commentaries on the Torah (the five books of Moses) and is often considered the most important work of Jewish mysticism, known as Kabbalah (Wikipedia).

(2) Ishmael is recognized as the most important prophet of Islam. Unlike Christians and Jews, Muslims believe that Ishmael was Abraham's firstborn, conceived by the maidservant Hagar. Ishmael is recognized by Muslims as the ancestor of Muhammad. Muslims also believe that Muhammad was a descendant of Ishmael (Wikipedia). God blessed Ishmael because he was circumcised and that he would become a great nation (The Bible, Genesis 21 and the Zohar, Volume III).
