Introduction
In various articles on the website, attention has been paid to the subject of the angels of the nations. This article attempts to provide additional information on this. It is a difficult task to meet this requirement. Information has been collected from theological literature. This is from the Bible, Jewish articles and Jewish researchers and scholars. As an example: Genesis states that current humanity is descendant of the sons of Noah, Shem Cham and Jaspheth. From these sons they founded separate Shem, Cham and Japheth nations (The Bible, the Zohar and Ask, Noah, April 2025).
The 70 nations in Genesis 10 are composed as follows. From Japheth these are 14 nations. From Cham 30 nations and Shem 26 nations (The Bible and the List of Nations Wikepedia). It is noted that one of the sons of Cham is Cush. This is the father of Nimrod. Nimrod was a mighty hunter before God on earth. His kingdom was in the land of Shinar (1).
Genesis 11 outlines God's original intention. This was that the whole earth had one language with the same words. The unity of the language made communication possible between the nations of Japheth, Ham and Shem (The peoples and their languages - about Genesis 10:1 - 11:10, Robbert Veen, June 2023).
This resulted in the nations of the sons of Noah, who had come to live together in the land of Shinar (the Kingdom of Nimrod), deciding to build a tower with its top reaching to heaven. The purpose of this was that they would not be scattered over the earth. In response, God decided to confuse the tongues so that they would be scattered over the earth. God also appointed 70 angels as direct protectors over these 70 nations. So God does not have direct supervision here, but he does have indirect supervision. Everything that takes place in creation is observed and revealed by God (Moshe Chaim Luzatto, The way of God, translated by Arey Kaplan, 1997).
From the above it can be deduced that the separate 14 nations of Japheth are each under a different angel and have their own language. This also applies to the 30 nations of Ham (30 angels) and the 26 nations of Shem (26 angels) (2).
In general, the African peoples (non-Arab) are identified as descendants of Ham. The Easterners are identified as descendants of Japhes [Japheth]. Ham and Japhes were also the forefathers of other ancient peoples (Ask Noah, May 6, 2007) (3).
The great Assyrian Empire, under King Sennacherib, conquered many areas and relocated the native population to other locations. The reason for this was to prevent the conquered people from rebelling against them (Rabbijn Yehuda Shurpin, Chabad.org).
It is important to note that the king of the Babylonian empire, Nebuchadnezzar, also forcibly mixed the original peoples he conquered so that they would lose their independent national identity.
For example, the Talmud states that the original Ishmaelites mixed with the other peoples who were descended from Abraham and Keturah. Likewise, the original Egyptians, Moabites, and Ammonites can no longer be identified by this. The only peoples [within his vast empire] that Nebuchadnezzar did not mix were the exiles of Judea and of course his own Babylonian people [Babylon = Assyria] (Ask.Noah, May 6, 2007).
In summary. From the moment that Sennacherib and Nebuchadnezzar conquered the known world and mixed the populations of all the pagan nations they conquered, there was no longer a recognized paternal lineage for the original 70 Biblical nations. With the exception that Sennacherib and Nebuchadnezzar did not mix the populations of their own nations (the Assyrians and the Babylonians) and distant lands that he did not conquer (December 21, 2009). What we have now are different nationalities, ethnic groups, and cultures. There are also the shifting borders of modern nations up to and including the present day (Ask.Noah, January 2010).
There is a difference between the Christian and Jewish explanations about the free will of angels in general and therefore also of the angels of the nations.
The question from the above text is: Are the mixed nations also under a specific angel?
This looks at nations in history and those of the more modern nations.
Finding an answer is a difficult or impossible task, because little information is available. For example: who is of the 70 angels, the angel of Heber, from whom Abraham descended and as Hebrew is named as one of the 26 nations of Shem. Abraham is the ancestor of Israel and Ishmael (4).
Nevertheless, an attempt will be made to gain more insight from the information obtained.
It will start by investigating whether locations of the 70 nations can still be recognized.
Research
Of the original 70 nations, a few of the 30 Cham nations are known. “I will cause an earthquake: all their hosts will tremble when I cast down the prince (angel) of Babylon”. God punishes the not, until He first punishes their heavenly princes (The Complete Jewish Bible with Rashi commentary). The fall of this Empire was in 562 B.C. (Mark Cartwright, Haning Gardens of Babylon, July 27, 2016). Babylon was situated between the rivers Euphrates and Tigris.
The angels of Egypt (MitzraiÏm) (the Zohar part 3) and Canaan (5) (The Complete Jewish Bible (Rashi, Sefaria, Numbers 24:2 and the Jewish Study Bible, 1999) are still mentioned in the Bible after the confusion of tongues at Babel. Of the 14 Japheth nations, Armenians and Greeks can still be recognized with the angel of Greece (Daniel 10). Of the 26 Sem nations, Israel and Arabia (Wikepedia) are still known. Michael is the angel of Israel in the Bible (Daniel 10). Of Arabia, the angel of Ishmael is mentioned in The Zohar.
After the 70 original angels, new nations with their own angels emerged. As an example, the angel of the Amorites in Mesopotamia is mentioned (The Jewish Study Bible, 2004). He cast out the guardian angel of the Amorites, who were in the upper heavens (6), came down under the feet of Moses and trod upon his neck (Rashi on Numbers 24:2).
Medinat Yisrael is a Torah commandment (by tzvi fishman Aug 7, 2020)
The uniqueness of Eretz Yisrael is described by the Ramban (7). He mentions how God appointed the heavenly servants (angels) to rule over all the lands of the world, except Israel, where only God rules. In the Land of Israel, a Jew’s connection to God is a direct connection. That is why the Land of Israel is known as the Holy Land. In contrast, a Jew outside the Land of Israel can only reach God through the intermediary angel who rules over that land. When a Jew in the Diaspora prays, he is actually directing his prayer to the national angel of America or the national angel of France. This is what the Talmud means when it states that a Jew living in the Diaspora is as one who has no God.
These angels not only negatively influence the practice of Jews in the Diaspora, but also their thoughts. The foreign angels who are placed over the lands of the Diaspora determine the cultures, languages, and beliefs of the people who live there. These foreign ideas and values seep into the brain through a process of cultural osmosis. For the nations of the world, this is the way things are supposed to be. But when it happens to a Jew who lives in a foreign land, and he or she is not connected to the land of Israel, it is different.
Rabbinic Information
Angels in European Nations (Hasidic Jewish Stories, Chabad.org)
The Jewish people were expelled from Spain in 1492. They sought refuge in European nations and were rejected almost everywhere. The reason was that this was the earthly reflection (8) of a drama in heaven. The angels of these European nations did not want Jews in their territory. For if the Jewish people were to settle among our nations, synagogues are built to study the Torah. Also, the Jewish people state that there is only one God. What will become of us (as angels of the European nations)? We will fall apart (The Baal Shem Tov Chabad.org, Library, Jewish Chassidic Stories) (9).
Every nation, in order to exist in the physical world, must be connected to an angel in the spiritual world. The angel represents the spiritual potential that a country contains and provides cohesion (Rabbi Yisroel Ciner, Pasha Insights, November 29, 2017 and Chaim Luzatto, Derech Hashem, The Way to God, 1996).
Answer Mendel Adelman about an angel of a nation (July 25, 2024)
The angel is the symbol of the values and norms that are present in a nation.
There are 2 types of angels
Type 1 Assigned angels by God Himself
A. These are the angels over the areas of the 70 nations, which are mentioned in Genesis.
B. Separate smaller nations in a 70 nation area (but with the same religion or culture). In such a 70 nation area nations have their own angel under the highest angel. As an example the angel of Europe over the European nations (The Angel of Europe, Angels in the Bible, August 6, 2017) (10).
Type 2 Every nation has a type of angel, which originated from the material world
Every nation has a type of angel. The united energy of the natcreates a spiritual counterpart. That counterpart is an angel of the type 2 angel of the nation. These angels derive their existence from the energy of the people. As such they can come into being and cease to exist when the nation is born or dies. The culture and values in the nations create an angel in the spiritual world, as it were. This is in contrast to angels that are assigned from the spiritual world to nations. Like the angels of the 7 nations that are in principle timeless (Rabbi Adelman, Chabad. org., July 25, 2022) (11). And they have a God-given life force. These angels have life force like that of type 1. The type 2 angels derive their life force from the behavior and culture that is present at that time. They are usually more secular nations, where the influence of religion is moderate.
Answer by Dr. Michael Schulman, May 12, 2024
A similar interpretation is the statement by Dr. Michael Schulman (Ask.Noah). He assumes type 2. Every blade of grass has its angel. Of course, this also applies to things that are more important than blades of grass, including the modern nations of the world. There is no limit to the number of angels that God creates. The difference is that he states that God creates the angel.
Following the keeping or not keeping of God's commandments by a nation.
If a nation sins badly, it weakens its angel. The reverse is also true. When a nation acts according to God's commandments, it strengthens its angel (Chaim Luzzatto, The Way to God, translated by Arey Kaplan, 1996). God first weakens the angel and then the nation (Isaiah 24:21). The nation gradually becomes detached from God. Other spiritual powers are given the opportunity to enter the spiritual realm. When society neglects God's commandments, they create angels with a negative influence.
Conclusion
Mixed nations
From the above it is clear that both in history and in the present, the resulting mixed nations are each under their own angel. Canaan with the city of Gaza and Egypt are examples of the original nations. Their angels are also mentioned in The Zohar, Volume III and Rashi commentary in the Complete Jewish Bible, Chabad.org). Despite the fact that much has changed in history, the life force is perhaps less present. Both countries have become mixed nations. Political power and religion are subject to Islam and the angel of Ishmael (The Zohar part 3 p. 102, 1984).
Type 1 and 2 angels of the nations
Christian state religions (Wikipedia)
In Western Europe and South America, most countries had a (Catholic, Orthodox or Protestant) state religion. Because these clashed with freedom of religion and with the ideas of liberals and socialists, who initiated secularization, the state religion has usually been completely removed from legislation and public life, as happened in all ex-communist countries.
Editors KnacK Magazine, (20-01-2021, 18:57)
In Western Europe, a minority of the population (43 percent) calls itself religious, 37 percent is non-believer and 14 percent is atheist. The least religious country in Europe is Sweden, where only 19 percent of the population still calls itself religious, 78 percent of the population is non-believer or atheist. This is followed by the Czech Republic, where only 23 percent is religious, and the Netherlands with 26 percent. In France, 40 percent call themselves religious.
Islam is generally considered the fastest growing religion in Europe, mainly due to immigration and above-average birth rate
It is said that the Christian angels (type 1B angels) of the European and South American nations have weakened over time. Their positions have become such that they are being displaced by the type 2 angels and the Islamic religion with its associated angel. This means that the life forces of these nations are also decreasing.
Finally
Our sages taught that every human act creates an angel. Good acts create angels who intercede for us in heaven. Bad acts create angels who persecute us in heaven. The Baal Shem Tov (the Lord of the Good Name) went one step further and taught that not only our actions, but also the words we speak create angels. (Chabad.org).
What type of angels do you think are most prevalent in Western Europe today?
Footnotes
(1) He was a mighty hunter before the Lord. His kingdom was Babel, Erech, Accad and Caine in the land of Shinar. Nimrod also had influence over the sons of Japheth and Shem and ruled over all of humanity at that time.
(2) As an example. 14 different angels in the Japheth section, such as Elisha, Javan, Magog, etc. are under their own specific guardian angels. We can infer from this that the intention of the Torah was to tell us that each of the 70 descendants of Noah produced a clan, each speaking its own language. The Midrash describes what happened. When the people built the Tower of Babel, God called upon 70 ministering angels and said, "Let us confuse their languages into 70 nations and 70 languages, and let us cast lots." They cast lots, each angel representing one nation, and Abraham's lot fell to God.
(3) The 70 original nations, from Shem, Ham, and Japheth, who spread out from Babylon after the Tower of Babel, are listed in Genesis chapter 10. These are regional societies that, much later.
(4) Israel means warrior with divine beings (Rabbi R. Evers, January 17, 2023). Ismael is a Hebrew boy's name. It means `God will hear` (Ishmael definitions, Encyclo.nl).
(5) They are direct sons of Cham (Table of Nations). Mizraim means Egypt. Ancient Canaan with Gaza included present-day Israel, the Palestinian territories, Lebanon and the western parts of Jordan and Syria (In History and The Jewish Study Bible, 2004).
(6) In the heavenly regions there are different spheres from high to low.
(7) Nachmanides, or Moshe ben Nachman, Hebrew: acronym Ramban (Gerona, 1194 - Palestine, circa 1270) was a Spanish rabbi, physician.
(8) See the article on the website: What do the angels and their nations still mean in this day and age?
(9) Indeed, the Jewish Chassidic Stories imply that modern nations in Europe are under angels. If a nation migrates, such as in migrations, then this also applies to the angel. When a nation branches out into multiple nations, then they are also governed by their own angel as a substitute for the primary angel (answer Rabbi Brownstein, August 2019).
(10) Every continent, every country, has its own guardian angel, as the church fathers teach us. We already find this in the Old Testament (The Angel of Europe, in Angels in Europe, August 6, August 6, 2017).
(11) A nation is an area where all inhabitants are led by the same government. The word nation can also refer to a group of people who have a shared history, traditions, culture, and often a shared language—even if the group does not have its own political sphere (Dec 3, 2024). The earthly sphere is connected to the spiritual sphere (Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz).
